چکیده
Liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (LPTEM) is an essential tool for studying the dynamics of materials interactions at nanoscale, in and/or with their operational environment. Microfabricated SiN x membrane cells further allow integration thin-film electrodes that opens technique to studies heterogeneous electrocatalysts under relevant electrochemical conditions. However, experiments remain challenging and characteristics dedicated beam liquid electrolyte demand careful interpretation results. Herein, we discuss important aspects concern implementation LPTEM (ec-LPTEM). We first consider range information can be accessible electrocatalytic applications detail influence thickness flow electrolytes using membrane-based microcells. Further, provide guidelines pertinent configuration substrate working, reference, counter electrodes. validate these considerations by experimentally demonstrating application ec-LPTEM CO 2 reduction reaction (CO RR), oxygen (ORR), evolution (OER). Transmission electron microscopy with Zernike phase plate.
The possibility of implementing a Zernike phase plate in a transmission electron microscope is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The phase-retarding plate in the form of thin film with a hole in the center is positioned in the back-focal plane of the objective lens. The experiments show that the phase plate functions as predicted, producing a cosine-type phase contrast transfe...
متن کاملIn situ transmission electron microscopy of solid-liquid phase transition of silica encapsulated bismuth nanoparticles.
The solid-liquid phase transition of silica encapsulated bismuth nanoparticles was studied by in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nanoparticles were prepared by a two-step chemical synthesis process involving thermal decomposition of organometallic precursors for nucleating bismuth and a sol-gel process for growing silica. The microstructural and chemical analyses of the nanopar...
متن کاملTransmission Electron Microscopy of Lipid Vesicles in Liquid Cells
Liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows promise for enabling nanometer-scale imaging of fluid-hydrated biological material by enclosing specimens within windowed devices [1]. However, the thickness of the liquid cell reduces the signal-to-noise ratios of acquired images, a particular problem for researchers imaging biological specimens. Thus investigators typically image biolog...
متن کاملHigh-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy Observation of Liquid-Phase Bonded Aluminum/Sapphire Interfaces
In this paper, we characterized aluminum/sapphire interface structure by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It was found that step structures of sapphire formed at the aluminum/sapphire interfaces during the liquid-phase bonding. It was discovered that the addition of silicon in aluminum significantly reduces the step growth at the interface. Silicon was found to segregate ...
متن کاملStudying localized corrosion using liquid cell transmission electron microscopy.
Localized corrosion of Cu and Al thin films exposed to aqueous NaCl solutions was studied using liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM). We demonstrate that potentiostatic control can be used to initiate pitting and that local compositional changes, due to focused ion beam implantation of Au(+) ions, can modify the corrosion susceptibility of Al films.
